VDTs and Vision

More than half of all VDT operators experience eyestrain, headaches, blurred vision and other symptoms directly and indirectly related to increased, sustained nearpoint visual stress associated with the use of VDTs. Visual stress also may underlie complaints of general body fatigue, reduced efficiency at work and higher error rates as the day progresses.

Most of these symptoms are alleviated through a combination of correcting workstation conditions, posture, stress-relieving lenses prescribed specifically for VDT operation, and in some cases, through improving vision skills with visual training.

Vision Therapy

What is Developmental Optometry?
You may not be aware of it, but your visual system brings you much information about your world. When you look at something, you don't just "see" with your eyes; you inspect, discriminate, identify and interpret - all as a part of your visual system.

Developmental optometry is an expanded area of optometric practice. When you visit your developmental optometrist, you may notice a difference in your examination. You will find that you are tested for very specific visual skills. You may find that many of your questions about vision care are answered. And you will receive the clinical guidance you need to develop the skills which provide for an efficient visual system. More Info

Sunglasses Are More Than Shades

Sunglasses have gone from a fashion accessory to a necessity. You depend on them for driving, recreation and most outdoor daytime activities.

When choosing your sunglasses, you probably still look for a fashionable frame but, more importantly, you should be seeking lenses to meet your eye's needs for comfort and protection.

Factors you will want to consider are your eyes, your lifestyle and your personal preferences.

In addition to visible light, the sun has two invisible forms of radiation: infrared (IR) and ultraviolet (UV).

Your eyes' natural infrared protection is generally sufficient under normal outdoor seeing conditions. Your UV protection may not be.

For more help we can give you additional advice about prescription and non-prescription sunglasses based on what is best for your individual needs.

Better Sports Through Better Vision

Have you ever wished you could improve your batting average, lower your golf score or just play your favorite sport better? If so, you're like most sports participants. We all want to do better at the things we enjoy doing. Sharpening your vision skills is one way of improving your "game" and giving yourself a "winning edge".

Your vision, just like the strength in your arms and the speed in your legs, plays an important part in how well you play your game. And, just like exercise and practice can increase your strength and speed, there are ways you can improve your visual fitness.

We can design a vision therapy program to maximize your visual skills and help you see better and play better.

Contact Lenses

Contacts are still a relatively recent development in vision correction. They became popular because they do not change cosmetic apearance and they provide better peripheral vision than glasses. They also allow more freedom during recreational and sporting activities.

  • Daily wear lenses correct all degrees of nearsightedness and farsightedness.
  • Extended wear lenses enable the patient to wear his or her lenses--even while sleeping--for typically, a week at a time.
  • Toric lenses can successfully correct astigmatism.
  • Bifocal lenses are available for people with presbyopia (normal aging process which causes one to require reading glasses).
  • Disposable lenses have eliminated most of the hassles and concerns of properly caring for lenses.

Why buy contacts from your eye doctor?

Contacts Instead of Bifocals!

Contact lenses that help correct both your near and distance vision, called bifocal contact lenses, are available in many different varieties to suit different lifestyles and eye health requirements.

Because they're soft, they're especially comfortable, even if you've never worn contact lenses before. And they'll stay on your eyes comfortably, even when you're playing tennis, golf, or other sports.

Contacts for Astigmatism

People with astigmatism once had limited options. But today thanks to toric soft contact lenses, people with astigmatism can enjoy the convenience and comfort ssociated with soft disposable lenses.

These lenses are different from traditional toric lenses. Because they're the first toric contact lenses that:

  • are designed to be replaced once a month, so your lenses always feel clean and fresh
  • may eliminate the need for weekly enzyme cleaning
  • give you 12 pairs of lenses for about what you'd spend on 1 pair of traditional toric contacts
  • come with spare pairs in case you lose or tear a lens

Spectacles

Glasses continue to be the most popular choice for vision correction--and with good reason. They are carefully crafted to fit so each patient can expect consistent, clear vision for a lifetime.

  • Lens materials continue to improve. High index plastic lenses are thinner and stronger than ever.
  • Improvements in lens coatings extend the life of the lenses and can protect the eyes from harmful ultraviolet light.
  • Frame materials have also undergone dramatic technological advancements to provide a more durable fram that continues to look good through the years.

LASER VISION CORRECTION

Correction of vision problems--nearsightedness, farsighedness and astigmatism--by means of surgery has been available since the early 1970s.

Recent advancements in technology have taken this form of vision correction to new heights. Refractive surgery can reshape the surface of the eye (cornea) more precisely and more predictably than ever before.

With refractive surgery, many people have been able to become less dependent on glasses and contacts. Hundreds of thousands have stopped wearing corrective lenses altogether.

For FDA LASIK Surgery Checklist, click here.

Here are some of the refractive procedures currently being performed:

  • Interlase
  • Wave Front LASIK
  • Photorefractive Keratectomy (PRK)
  • Lamellar Keratoplasty (ALK)
  • Laser In-Situ Keratomileusis (LASIK)
  • Radial Keratotomy (RK)
  • Astigmatic Keratotomy (AK)

Future technology: There are more refractive procedures and techniques under development. Each is designed to correct certain types and ranges of vision problems. Be assured that our entire staff is committed to ongoing education and investigation of all technological advancements relating to the care of your eyes.
