Dr. Larry Fabian graduated Cum Laude from California State University at Northridge, where he received a bachelors degree in Biology. He earned an additional bachelors and his Doctor of Optometry degree upon graduating Magna Cum Laude and class Salutatorian from the Southern California College of Optometry in 1980.

During his clinical externship, Dr. Fabian received the following awards: the California Optometric Association Auxiliary Achievement Award for outstanding general clinical abilities, the Vodnoy Vision Therapy Award, the Dow Corning Contact Lens Award, the Designs for Vision/Low Vision Award for Excellence in working with the visually handicapped, and the Bernell Clinical Science Award for outstanding performance within the specialty of vision therapy. In addition to these clinical awards, he also received the California Optometric Laboratory Research Award for research into applications of measuring the electrical activity in the visual portion of the brain. He also was named to the gold Key Honor Society for leadership qualities while in optometry school. In 1980, Dr. Fabian was published in Who's Who Among Students in American Colleges.

Following graduation, Dr. Fabian worked in a southern California contact lens clinic specializing in designing cosmetic contact lens effects for the movies and television. He was involved with many designs and fittings, the most well known being the green and white contact lenses used in the television show, The Incredible Hulk.

Dr. Fabian's career next led him to the U. S. Army Medical Service Corp., with which he was stationed in West Germany for 3 years. During his assignment as chief of the clinic, Dr. Fabian organized and participated in one of the most active contact lens fitting clinics and one of the very few military clinics to offer a vision therapy program in its community.

During the past twenty years, Dr. Fabian has been practicing optometry in a multi-specialty practice in San Jose where he specializes in vision perceptual and developmental testing and therapy, and contact lens fittings. He spends many of his evenings and lunches lecturing to young parents and teachers on the topic of preventing vision related learning problems. In addition, Dr. Fabian does computer and vision consulting with many local companies.

In the time away from their professions, Larry and his wife, Caryn, enjoy snow and water skiing, camping, playing racquet ball and are avid travelers, but at the present time, are very busy raising three wonderful children, Nathan, Natalie and Andrew.

Dr. Jeffrey Fanelli was born and raised in West San Jose, where he graduated from Blackford High School and received academic honors including a California State Scholarship award to the University of Santa Clara. In 1979 he graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Combined Sciences. Before entering Optometry School, Dr. Fanelli worked at Lockheed Missiles in Sunnyvale as a Communication Satellite Operations Engineer. He received his Doctor of Optometry degree from Southern California College of Optometry in 1984. While in Optometry school, Dr. Fanelli was active in many academic, administrative and professional optometric organizations.

Following graduation, Dr. Fanelli started his optometric practice with an established optometrist in San Jose who is world known for his contact lens care products.  He spent about two years with him, gaining much experience in the area of contact lenses. In early 1985, Dr. Fanelli began working with one of the top ophthalmologists (eye surgeons) in Santa Cruz who has an outpatient surgical center adjacent to his office and specializes in cataract surgery, corneal transplants, radial keratotomy, laser treatment, cosmetic eye surgery, retinal photography and contact lenses. Dr. Fanelli spent over five years, part-time, in Santa Cruz adding to his knowledge of vision care.

In February 1986 Dr. Fanelli established, with Dr. Larry Fabian, Westside Family Vision Center as a general partnership. They went on to open a second office in February 1987, Saratoga Vision Center.

Dr. Fanelli is a member of the American Optometric Association, California Optometric Association and Santa Clara County Optometric Society (S.C.C.O.S.), in which he served on the Board as Director of Communications for several years.  He has worked extensively in the past on the S.C.C.O.S. "Save your Vision Month" project. Dr. Fanelli has been on local radio stations such as KBAY, KLIV and KARA, along with the San Jose News channel KNTV.  He has also had several newspaper articles published in many of the local county newspapers, including the San Jose Mercury News, such as "Keep children's good vision and eye safety in mind when selecting toys at Christmas", "Safety Tricks for Halloween", "Vision problems may lead to problems in the classroom", "Tips on selecting the best sunglasses for your eyes", "Medicare vision benefits expanded to include optometry" and "Save your vision month to feature free vision screenings and county-wide coloring contest for children". In addition, Dr. Fanelli has helped design many public service messages regarding the above topics for local radio stations.

Dr. Fanelli belongs to the Saratoga Chamber of Commerce, University of Santa Clara and Southern California College of Optometry Alumni Associations, Beta Sigma Kappa Honor Fraternity and the Omega Epsilon Phi Fraternity.

He plays the baritone saxophone in the Studio Band, is involved in football and spends much of his spare time working towards his Black Belt in Karate.  Dr. Fanelli and his family enjoy sports, snowboarding, boating and traveling.

Dr. Mary E. Dougherty  is a transplant from the midwest. She was born and raised in Wisconsin and attended the University of Wisconsin-Platteville where she majored in biology and chemistry. She graduated with academic honors and was awarded the Leo E. Boebel scholarship.

Her pursuit of higher education next took her to Chicago, Illinois to the Illinois College of Optometry. Her optometric training included rotations in the following areas: primary care, contact lens service, pediatrics, low vision and general opthalmologic service. In the primary care rotation she diagnosed, treated and managed ocular disease, used diagnostic and therapeutic drugs and also helped patients select frames, fit glasses and repaired them. In the cornea and contact lens section, she fit patients with a wide variety of rigid gas permeable and soft contact lenses. This included lenses to correct astigmatism and bifocal contacts. The pediatric experience consisted of comprehensive optometric care of infants and children. This included evaluation of visual development, binocular vision, strabismus (eye turns), and contact lens fitting. The low vision rotation allowed her to evaluate and manage the care of visually impaired patients. She dispensed magnifiers, telescopes and other low vision devices. Dr. Dougherty's clinical training was extensive and thorough. She was also very active in professional and academic organizations. Dr. Dougherty was honored with the Pediatric/Binocular Vision Department Award for outstanding clinician.

Dr. Dougherty also did an internship at the Cleveland Veterans Administration Medical Center in Cleveland, Ohio. In this experience, she worked closely with opthalmologists (eye surgeons) in the pre-operative and post-operative care of patients with cataracts, glaucoma, diabetic changes, and retinal abnormalities. The large retired population that she worked with at the clinic allowed her to expand her skills in visual field interpretation and retinal photodocumentation.

Following graduation, Dr. Dougherty moved to California and started working with an established optometric group in Salinas, Ca. There she worked largely with contact lenses, specifically specialty contact lens fits. She has also spent over a year working with a local opthalmologist who specializes in treating glaucoma and cataracts. This has added to her knowledge of what services are available in our area.

Dr. Dougherty is a member of the American Optometric Association, California Optometric Association, Santa Clara Optometric Society and the Fellowship of Christian Optometrists. Mary and her husband, Ken, enjoy scuba diving, hiking, camping and snow skiing.
